Fears about pesticides in Senegal, West Africa
A highly toxic insecticide caused a major spate of poisonings andÌýfatalities in SenegalÌýin 1999/2000. Farmers in the groundnut producing region were using it without proper training. Since then, despite efforts to guarantee the safety of produceÌýfor international consumers, tests carried out by the research and lobby group, Pesticide Action Network Africa, have revealed that fruit and vegetables sold in local markets are often contaminated with highly hazardous pesticides.
Senegalese Farmer, Jeanne Diatara set up the organization REFABEC --The Network of Women in Organic Agriculture and Fair Trade -- three years ago, in an attempt to supply local people with pesticide-free produce. She's been speaking to Angela Robson.
