We Can Campaign 28ÌýFeb 2008
How Oxfam is tackling domestic abuse in India

According to Oxfam, one in five married women in India experiences domestic violence from the age of 15. Every six hours, a young married woman is burnt alive, beaten to death or forced to commit suicide; and an estimated 15,000 women suffer from dowry-related violence every year. To try and combat this abuse, Oxfam has joined forces with nearly 2,000 organisations across the Indian sub-continent, to challenge and change attitudes. To date, the We Can campaign has mobilised five million ‘Change Makers’ – ordinary women, and men, prepared to speak up and take action against violence in their communities. By educating people at a grassroots level, the campaign hopes to spread its message across all classes and communities. And by 2011, the goal is to have 50 million changemakers across the region. In Chennai, the campaign is being organised by the International Foundation for Crime Prevention and Victim Care, or PCVC. Clare Jenkins went along to the centre to talk to some of those involved.
