The mix of Arab and African culture on the island of Zanzibar has created an intriguing attitude towards sex. In previous times, whilst it was publicly taboo, in private it was venerated, with young women being taught its arts by a special godmother figure, known as a Somo or Kungwe. Today, despite increased exposure to sex, a growing interest in Islam has lead to it being less talked about behind closed doors.
