Changes to their role under Hamas
Since the Islamic movement Hamas took power from its rival Fatah in the Gaza strip last June, the party has been putting its stamp on all the institutions of power. The police force has been transformed and Hamas' stricter form of Islam has particularly affected policewomen. The new policewomen recruited by Hamas do not wear a police uniform - just a veil and a loose fitting dress. They don't patrol the streets and they don't work as closely with their male colleagues. But on the other hand, according to Hamas, policewomen do things that there were not able to do under Fatah - like going out on drug raids and interrogating suspects. Hamada Abuqammar has been to meet some of the women police recruits.
