In September 1665, a parcel of cloth was sent from London to the village of Eyam in Derbyshire.
Within a matter of days, the tailor who had received it had died of Plague. The village was plunged into a nightmare that wouldn't end until fifteen months later. By then, more than thirds of its population had died.
Geraldine Brooks, author of a new novel based on the story of Eyam, talks about the role of women in the Great Plague. Year of Wonders - A Novel of the Plague by Geraldine Brooks (Fourth Estate; ISBN; 1841154571, £12.99).
