![Sunny Lowry swims the channel](/staticarchive/12f356e70569872e66c6e259128dec0ef6310dd5.jpg) Seventy years ago, on August 29th, 1933, a young Manchester woman, Sunny Lowry, stepped ashore at St Margarets Bay in Dover, having swum the English Channel. To prepare for the swim she ate a hearty breakfast of an 8 egg omelette, then trained for 3-4 hours a day in the sea.
Sunny swam all night, contending with the currents and a shoal of jellyfish. After 15 hours 41 minutes she reached St Margarets Bay, the first ever English woman ever to swim the Channel. Sunny was berated as a "harlot" because she exposed her bare knees.
Today, aged 92, she returns to St Margarets Bay, where she joins Rebecca Davies to recall her epic swim.
