Beatrice Cenci was executed in Rome in 1599 aged 22. She had organised the murder of her father, a sadistic noblemen, who had raped and imprisoned her. Her public execution provoked a public outpouring of grief from the Romans who lined the streets on the day of her death.
Her story has inspired writers and artists - from Shelley and Herman Melville to Julia Margaret Cameron and the Victorian sculptress Harriet Hosmer.
