Ìý Cleaning the step 04 MayÌý2004 Ìý
Sue Elliot-Nicholls investigates theÌýart of a gleaming doorstep.

Last week the Government told us all to take more exercise and theÌýchief medical officer said that needn't mean going to the gym - it could involve doing more housework. So what sort of cleaning could get you fitter? Up until the 1960s it was a common sight to see women and girls on their knees along the street all scrubbing their doorsteps in perfect unison.

Jean Brisson from Glasgow still keeps the art alive and she agreed to share with Sue Elliott-Nicholls the secret of creating aÌýshining step. Irlene Cox and Cathleen Bedford remember those days of a daily scrub.ÌýÌýÌý
