Pay equality 01听September 2005
After the Cleveland Dinner Ladies

When the Cleveland Dinner Ladies won their equal pay claim against their local authority in 1996, newspaper headlines at the time speculated that this case would cost councils up and down the land, over a billion pounds if they were forced to听equalise the pay of all their female workers with male workers on the same grade.

Almost a decade on what impact has the case of the Cleveland Dinner Ladies had on the pay and conditions of local authority female employees?

Action 4 Equality, a campaigning group, say not enough and now they are urging women to sue for improved pay. But are private claims against cash strapped local authorities really the way forward?

Eileen Goodenough of Action 4 Equality and Sarah Veale of the TUC join Jenni in the studio to discuss the merits of litigation versus negotiation.
