Yes, the Russian space program was an outstanding achievement but to this day I feel sick at the thought of the cruelty in sending a dog into space to die

I wasn't born then, but I'm a bit of a space nut, and what we take for granted today, like going into space, back then was a major achievement. I was very disappointed that the USA stopped going to the moon, we should have a colony on the moon by now. The ISS is a waste of time, in my opinion, what can we learn from putting people up there? What if Columbus never went back to the New World? The Space Race of the sixties was exciting, for me as a very young lad, but now it's lost its attraction, because they're wasting their time building the ISS.

I agree 120% Duncan. They could have sent a specimen from another frog-eating quadruped species (a member of which has been known to fly gracefully and unhindered all over the islands), but then they were communists who had something against "running dogs"( of capitalism or whatever).

duncan --i remember laika,but sadly she wasn't the only animal to be sacrified in the cause ""of progress and science"" and i'll bet there were loads of animals sent into space to die that we never heard of, as well as quite a few humans that the russians and americans sent up there in so called "unmanned spaceships"

Think I'll take a raincheck on that one thanks very much! A great deal of money was wasted on the manned space stuff, which I believe could have been much better spent on unmanned exploration. If it hadn't been for the ludicrous hubris of the competitors we might now know much more about what is or isn't out there...but someone adjacent to my left paw says it was awfully exciting being allowed to stay up late to watch Armstrong step out onto the moon...even if his phraseology left a bit to be desired.

There has been some incredible spin off's from the 'Space Race'...the Hubble telescope, computer technology, Inter continental balistic missles, gortex...etc, etc...probably best if we invest in what we have at the moment before going else where to make a mess...as a bright vulcan once said" Kirk rhymes with Jerk, Logic Jim,logic...'

I got told off for telling my,then 4 year old, sister that there was a dog up in the sky. She got very upset at the thought of it. !2 years later I was fortunate enough to make my first solo in a powered aircraft the same week as the first moon landing. a dozen or so of us young aspirant air traffic controllers stayed up with cases of beer to celebrate and then spent the rest of the week saying,"Beep," at the end of every radio transmission we made. I think we have grown up since but I still thinkmanned space exploration was worth it.
