The Way Forward

It's sad to see IB closing but understandable in that, in reality it was for a handful of bloggers who became a core of contributors. People came and people went and sometimes new blood enriched it and sometimes it didn't. If the community stays together the only way it can blossom is by attracting new bloggers and I can't see how this might happen unless IB is ceded to the 'members' in the same way we are getting our land back. Otherwise the 'goodwill' that IB has built just dies which is a waste of licence payers' money. I am sure if the BEEB gave us the site and we found a Moderator then the site might continue otherwise I see it going the same way as the Monarch of the Glen site did ( although that was a bleesing in my eyes). All that the BEEB would need to do would be to post a disclaimer and it could get the credit for the initial set up. It's an idea, not much of an idea but can anyone do better?

It's being so cheery keeps you going, eh Calum? But I agree, some publicity would be necessary to attract new lifeblood. A link from 麻豆官网首页入口 Scotland would be a big help.

There's nothing to stop the individual bloggers setting up their own blogs with Blogger (probably easiest) or Wordpress - except, maybe, for a lack of technical knowledge. I suspect that is the reason why most joined IB anyway. I hope to be blogging once I get up there but will be using Wordpress in conjunction with my own website. Individual blogs do lose the 'network' aspect although it's easy to create links. One way to continue the idea is to do what Angus Nicolson has done and allow (vetted) contributors to post to the same blog. I suspect that most of the IB'ers are not technically computer savvy (and probably don't want to be) and just need someone to set things up and hold their hands for a while, Why not get in touch with Silversprite who has his own Wordpress blog from Berneray and also - I think with his wife - runs a web design company. Surely there's somebody who has the technical knowledge? The domain name islandblogging.co.uk is available which will cost you 拢8.99 (plus VAT??) for two years and a webhosting account will cost around 拢3.50 a month (that's what my Webhost charges for their intro account). It does go up as the pound is falling!! If you don't want to pay or can't figure out how to share the costs you might get someone to donate some web space (might even be me!). Heck, with a bit of help (Silversprite?), I might even be able to set it up alongside my own website for nothing. I'd happily pay for the domain name and donate the space but would need to check bandwidth and might need some help setting up the Wordpress bit. Regards to you all, Les Ellingham

Les Ellingham a.k.a. The White Knight. The islandblogging domain name would be fabulous!

Les before doing anything check out IBHQ blog and see what others are trying to do on the Wordpress.com solution. It's great to have more than 1 group actively seeking a solution but they need to stay in contact with each other so as not to get into competition.

Barney from Swithiod don't get the lines crossed

Barney, just making the offer, I don't intend to plough ahead with anything until I know whether it is wanted/worthwhile. I see that someone has already set up island-blogging.co.uk but it doesn't seem to be what I had in mind which would be a WordpressMU setup allowing individual blogs within a framework much as it works now. Trouble is that there doesn't seem to be an easy way to contact the individual IB'ers other than leaving messages such as this which is not really satisfactory. Les

Islad blogging has been very successfull in many ways but one of its failings has been the lack of representation from local people. It would appear that a lot of the blogging is done by incomers to the lslands (of whom I am one) you know, the sort of people who use that awful expression "off-island" ....... Dont know if it is the usual case of local people being too busy with ordinary life to have the time for it, or else if it just another example of incomers having the loudest voices. Who knows? It's been fun, but I accept the limitations of the format and it had to end some day. Be good, have fun, stay safe online! Cheers MM

Hi Les, yes, there is a new site. It is bretty basic at this time but the initiator has a lot of other things to do as well as blogging. My advice is to migrate to the new site and have patience while it gets organised. The intention seems to be to end up with a structure similar to this IB but it may take some time.

Barney from Swithiod behold the dawn of a new era

"migrate to the new site" - where is it, Barney? Can you give us a map? :-)

Calum, are you coming over to join us on island-blogging.co.uk?

Arnish Lighthouse from Stornoway

You must! You're a Progenitor...at least, I think that's what you are...

Flying Cat from not going over without calumannabel

Calum. should move over to the other site, naturally (you've better!) # Calum. as Progenitor (capital P even!), eh FC? I guess it is possible. After all, Moses in his old age (or was it dotage?) did it: no reason why Calum, Lord of the Fank, should not be one.
