Rock against Racism

By Josh Withey
The Love Music, Hate Racism project visited Shrewsbury with a popular message and some good music, as Blast reporter Josh Withey discovered.

Latest for 2007

Subsource, Talk, Innasanctum, Long Nines and Newbreed will all play live at Shrewsbury Music Hall 7pm on 26 May. The Cultural Diversity Day will be held in the Square beforehand (11am-4.30pm) and will feature a variety of stalls, entertainment and workshops.

'Love Music Hate Racism' was the message that was being put across all over the square in Shrewsbury. With acts ranging from tribal fusion belly dancers to steel drummers it was never dull. And all around the music were stalls raising awareness over issues such as asylum seekers.

The Rock Against Racism movement began 30 years ago supported by bands like The Clash and The Tom Robinson Band. Now named Love Music Hate Racism, the project is still going strong and influencing people and artists all over the country.

So after the henna art and jazz-fusion came the bands in the Music Hall.听 MC Prince DJ Buzzword was first on... with a mixed response from the crowd. Many were more exited to see the break-dancers than the actual DJ performance.

Next up was Fade 2 - interesting to say the least. Fade 2 is a boy band consisting of three Liverpool lads specialising in harmonised singing. Featuring synchronised dancing/singing听 and what can only be described as 'boy band pop' it was as if I had stepped into a time warp and gone back to the 90鈥檚. It felt embarrassing to watch them perform and they didn鈥檛 really get a much better response from the audience.

The Kevs came next. One of the best way to describe them is wannabe Libertines. Their music style was very Libertines and even their mini stage invasion by the crowd was Libertines. All in all they could have been a tribute band. However there was some talent there and with a little work they could become a decent band.

InFlightMovie was the peak of the night. The audience loved them and the quality of the music was a world better than the previous acts with a distinctly original flavour as well. And they were a great live act with plenty of energy and charisma. They are a real rounded band with no obvious weak links.

Survival of the Fittest came next and played a decent set. The crowd really enjoyed it and got into the music. However, they weren't as memorable as many of the other bands that were on before them. The quality of their playing was superb for a local band but the sound was nothing new.听A good band that plays really well but perhaps needs to tap into more inspiration for their songs.

All in all it was a really good night with some really good bands. And the project is a truly great scheme.
