BlastYou are in: Shropshire > Blast > Percussion Unlimited heading down under ![]() Percussion Unlimited in Shrewsbury Percussion Unlimited heading down underBy Elena Woolley Four years on from touring Australia with Percussion Unlimited, I found myself enjoying the experience of standing by and watching the current ensemble play. On the 19 August 2007 the ensemble will embark on a journey to the other side of the world. Several helpings of airline food, a lay-over in Bangkok and about eight viewings of whatever film is showing later, the Percussion Unlimited 2007 tour will finally begin - that is once the group has recovered from their jetlag.
Being a member of one of the county's percussion ensembles isn't all trips abroad though. Percussion Unlimited performs all over the county throughout the year, in all weather. When I was a member of the ensemble we performed at the Newport Carnival. Brian Stone's extensive collection of percussion instruments were packed tightly onto the back of a tiny float, along with the entire ensemble and conductor, as part of the annual parade. As we moved along the streets the ensemble struggled to continue playing, while trying desperately not to fall off. No doubt the current ensemble will have undergone several similar experiences. The ensemble is made up of some of the best young percussionists from around the county, taught by their conductor Brian Stone. Several of Brian's pupils have gone on to musical success, including the 1998 winner of the 麻豆官网首页入口 Young Musician of the Year, Adrian Spillett. ![]() Percussion Unlimited The ensemble's 10 members - Joe, Felicity, Alex, Ashley, Kristian, Tony, Jonathan, Harry, Nick and Sam - have a lot to look forward to on the fifth Percussion Unlimited tour of Australia. The group will be touring Sydney, Melbourne and Adelaide during their 24 day trip. As well as performing in schools, they will also be performing in public, and representing Shropshire in the international Ballarat Eisteddfod on 5 September (competing against 12 other percussion ensembles for the Chenery prize). The ensemble will play The William Tell Overture, Mission Impossible, and Bohemian Rhapsody. Percussion Unlimited will be playing at various venues across the county over the summer to raise funds for their trek down under, and can be found playing in the Village Square section of the West Mid Show on Sunday the 24 June, as well as in Shrewsbury's historic square at 10.30am on 1 July. last updated: 12/07/07 SEE ALSOYou are in: Shropshire > Blast > Percussion Unlimited heading down under |
