Mark's Blast sports diary

Every week for eight weeks, Blast reporter Mark Elliott will be providing an insight into sport around the county. Catch up with the latest in his diary.

Thursday 19 September

This unfortunately, will be my last blog entry. It's my last week at 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Shropshire after a hugely insightful couple of months. I spent Tuesday watching AFC Telford United record another win in their unbeaten start to the season. It has to have been one of the worst games I have ever seen but the result was the right one.

Despite looking a bit dodgy at the back, AFC Telford beat the woeful Alfreton 3-0. Nobody could have expected such a great start from the newly promoted Bucks so congratulations to Rob Smith and Larry Chambers who have been really good to deal with over the last couple of months.

Last Sunday I watched hockey for the first time. Telford hockey club has become the first Shropshire side ever to play at National League level and won their first game of the season 2-0 against Sheffield. Hockey seems to be a fast and furious game and the club would welcome spectators or anyone interested in having a go. They certainly seem to a club with lofty ambitions and in a county short of national level sports teams I wish them every success.

My thunder has been well and truly stolen in terms of job departures today though. The big news is of course that Jose Mourinho has left Chelsea. I feel for Mr Mourinho. He has brought character, competition and success to Chelsea and great entertainment to the Premier League. An ego like that can only last so long however when constantly undermined as he has been over the last year or so.

There were a few unsavoury elements to Mourinho's tactics, mainly the intimidation of match officials. This should not be allowed, but more blame falls on the FA than clubs as officials lack protection. In any case, the man will be sorely missed I feel, and Chelsea have lost a key component in their success.

Without Mourinho the league will be far less entertaining. Perhaps Steve McClaren will be headhunted by Roman Abramovic and England can swap coaches. One can hope. Perhaps a future lies for Jose at my beloved Nottingham Forest. Sorry, now I'm just dreaming. In any case Chelsea must find a quality replacement and quickly.

I suspect Avram Grant is a temporary measure. The players were also very close to their coach. Perhaps the first job of the new manager will be to try and hang on to some of Chelsea's big name players. Lampard and Terry spring to mind.

The 拢10m pay-off will certainly soften the blow in the Mourinho household though and I imagine he will be back in football before too long. Perhaps too, you will be hearing from me before too long. I certainly hope so. As for the present, another year of university beckons so for now at least, rant over.
