Bridgnorth's Ourspace project

I went to see what happened when Bridgnorth's Rattlestick Theatre Company teamed up with the local 'yoof', thanks to £5,000 of Arts Council funding.

Starting off underneath the open arches of Bridgnorth Town Hall, the small group of performers persuade us to close our eyes as they form a circle around us.

What followed was an aural representation of the various noises that you hear in a busy market town. It built up into a loop, creating a kind of soundscape, made up of different noises the performers could make with their voices. I guess it was a bit like that scene in Oliver where the woman won't shut up about how cheap her roses are, but with speaking rather than all that annoying singing.

We were then taken on a tour around some of the sites of Bridgnorth in a promenade performance of poems and stories inspired by the town. This included being taken some of the way on a 'coach' – or cleverly used umbrellas to the casual observer.

A highlight was a walk along Castle Walk, taking in the stunning panoramic views of the Severn Valley, while hearing first-person anecdotes about significant landmarks. However, my favourite bit was the twisted ghost-story about a vicar. Apparently, the youths of Bridgnorth have quite vivid imaginations.

Overall, the audience seemed fairly impressed with the young performers' talents, and Les Winwood, Chair of the Bridgnorth District Council was one of them: "It was excellent. I thought they'd obviously spent a lot of time on working it out... they worked very hard... Bridgnorth District Council does sponsor a lot of youth projects and this one is no different – they're enthusiastic and it's great for us to support it."
