Most surprising
of all is the fact that Monsoon Wedding is an autobiographical account
of Mira Nair's own family.
So it came as no
surprise to see some of her nearest and dearest, making up the extras in this
joyful and most uplifting film.
To top it all, this film has created ripples across the globe by bagging the prestigious
Golden Lion Award at the Venice Film Festival.
The film follows the sequence of events that take place four days before a wedding
in a small Punjabi family during the start of the monsoon season.
Lalit and Pimmi Verma are the proud parents of the nervous bride, Aditi, who is
to have an arranged marriage with Hermant, an engineer from Houston, Texas.
Family tensions
are running high in the Verma household as we learn that Aditi is on the rebound
from a love affair with her former boss, Vikram.
Realizing her future
as a bored Texan housewife, Aditi decides to slip away to see her former lover
for one last time on the eve of the wedding day, with disastrous consequences.
Mira Nair has successfully
managed to interweave the lives and loves of a typical Indian family who are trying
to come to terms with the constant exposure of Western influence against the backdrop
of age-old Indian traditions and restrictions in modern India. A sheer intellectual
masterpiece which affirms Mira as one of Bollywood's elite directors.
This movie is a must-see, especially when it's doing the rounds in the cinemas
in both the Hindi and English versions.
We look forward to her forthcoming American release, Hysterical Blindness
which stars Uma Thurman, Juliette Lewis, Gena Powlands and Ben Gazzara.
