The
film focuses on one particular gang leader, Malik Bhai, who is well
known for running his organisation like a company.
Malik is on the lookout for fresh faces full of courage and determination
to increase his gang's numbers. Hence this comes in the form of
Chandu Nagre, an aggressive character whose nature veers towards
that of a merciless killer.
Malik takes an
instant liking to Chandu and makes him his right hand man much to the dismay and
jealousy of the other gang members.
The film then shows the grim reality as Malik eliminates his rivals and takes
full control of the underworld business together with Mumbai City as a whole with
the help of young Chandu.
Things take a turn
for the worse when Malik is forced to move his operations to Hong Kong after experiencing
great difficulties with the Mumbai Police Department. From there, they continue
to run their remaining part of the Company.
All seems to be going smoothly until one crucial misunderstanding
between Malik and Chandu leads to their breakup, causing a major
rift between the two characters.
Chandu immigrates to Nairobi, Kenya where he sets up his own Mafia gang. From
then on both gangs target each other as the hatred between Malik and Chandu begins
to grow.
Thrown into this
tense saga is tough police inspector Srinivasan. His mission is
to eliminate the Mafia gangs who are terrorizing Mumbai. This in
turn causes more problems for the 'split' Companies.
Lighter
moments amidst the tension filled story line comes in the form of
Saroja who is Malik's girlfriend, Kannu, who is Chandu's love interest,
and actress extraordinaire Seema Biswas
(from the well known film, 'The Bandit Queen') plays mother to young Chandu
whom she provides a source of strength and inspiration.
Director Ram Gopal Verma has managed to create the right ambience for this film
and if the audience thinks that his last masterpiece, 'Satya' was brilliant
then they should think twice with Verma's latest offering.
The background score by Sandeep Chowta deserves a special mention whereby it suits
the mood and atmosphere of the film like a glove.
He has proven once again to be one of the best music directors of Bollywood! Since
song and dance sequences did not form a major part of the film, Sandeep had a
mammoth task in front
of him which he has succeeded all the way.
Action sequences composed by Allan Amin were perfect and on par with Hollywood
action films.
Performance by
Ajay Devgan as Malik is full of conviction and exudes his emotions through his
eyes with great ease as usual.
But the applause is sure to go to Vivek Oberoi for his debut award winning performance
as the young Chandu Nagre.
Last but not the least, our felicitations go to director Ram Gopal
Verma for his portrayal of the underworld with great 'reality'
- Indian Cinema is surely going to remember this masterpiece for
a long time to come.
