The
inspiration of Mere Yaar Ki Shaadi (meaning My Best Friend's Wedding)
may have been derived from the Hollywood flick of the same name, but
believe it or not, this Bollywood version does spring a few surprises,
making it even better than its Hollywood counterpart.
The
curtain raises for this candy floss romance at the Gateway of India
which sees Mumbai flat-mates Sanjay (Uday Chopra) and Ria (Bipasha
Basu) discussing the concept of why men and women cannot have a
platonic friendship without the interference of love in their lives
at some point.
Life
for both these characters is just plain sailing until Sanjay receives
a call from his childhood friend Anjali inviting him to her wedding.
Observing
Sanjay's reaction to this news and hearing him talk to Anjali, Ria
concludes that Sanjay is still in love with his college pal.
After a discussion with Ria, Sanjay decides to stop the marriage.
He immediately sets off to Dehradun on a 'noble' mission to break
the wedding.
In
Debradun, he is happily reunited with Anjali and soon begins his
mission to win the hearts of Anjali's extended family and deservedly
succeeds in the process.
Unfortunately he soon comes face to face with his worse nightmare:
Rohit, the handsome and charismatic groom from New York who is the
most perfect gentleman a girl could hope for.
This
makes Sanjay's hopes of sabotaging the wedding even more difficult.
Despite this setback, Sanjay decides to take on the world by setting
off on a crusade to poison the family's mind against Rohit.
Its not long before Rohit realizes that Sanjay is the man behind
all these seemingly innocent coincidences and so decides to confront
him.
Finally,
both agree to let Anjali take the final decision. Does Rohit's integrity
win over Anjali or does Sanjay's love emerge triumphant?
Technically,
the film consists of brilliant cinematography, melodious music by
new comers Jeet-Pritam and good screen rapport between Jimmy Shergill
and Uday Chopra.
Also
one cannot fail to notice the spontaneous performances by all the
remaining cast. But then we would expect only the best from a Yash
Chopra film.
It is apparent that this is definitely Uday's opportunity to showcase
his talents and he pulls it off with great ease and confidence.
Bipasha Basu, who appears briefly in the film, looks stunning as
usual.
Like
the promos say, 'its my best friend's wedding so why not join in
the celebrations. . . .you are invited'
My
advice is that you take heed of Yash Chopra's offer because this
invitation is definitely not going to disappoint when it releases
at UCI Telford with English subtitles.
