Om
(Anil Kapoor), the eldest of the three brothers, is a simpleton who
works for a music industry. Jai (Fardeen Khan), the middle brother,
is very ambitious by nature. Seeing his liking for cars, Om sends
him to the US for further training.
Jagdish, the youngest, is a light-hearted computer whiz kid who has
a gift for hacking into high-security networks.
All three live a happy existence together with their doting mother Saraswati (Waheeda
Rehman) until things starts to go wrong.
Returning
from his studies, Jai gets married to Neetu (Urmila Matondkar) who
insists that they return to the US to lead a better life. Jai agrees
to her proposal.
In
the meantime, Jagadish gets caught hacking into his exam papers
and so is thrown out of university. When Om scolds him, Jagadish
accuses him of favouring Jai. This causes a split between them.
Suddenly
Om's life is shattered as all three go their separate ways. The
storyline is further complicated when Om is asked by his boss to
vacate the family home because of an unpaid loan.
In
one day, Om loses what he loves most in the world - his brothers,
his home, his job.
Believing
that the good times will soon return, Om tries to reunite his family
against all odds, with his wife, Ayesha (Mahima Choudary). She acts
as a pillar of strength in times of Om's sorrow.
'Om
Jai Jagadish' is a story about life 聟 it's all about moments
of glory and times of despair 聟 a story about tenacity, ambition
and the ultimate triumph of the human spirit.
But above all, 'Om Jai Jagadish' is a prayer - a prayer for togetherness.
Director Anupam Kher has managed to extract the very best from all
his cast considering that this is his first film. He has handled
the dramatic and emotional sequences with great care, especially
the climax scenes which are very well executed.
Veteran
actress Waheeda Rehman excels in her 'motherly' role especially
in the climax scene. Fardeen Khan has shown great sincerity in this
film whilst Abhishek Bachchan has definitely matured as far as acting
is concerned. As for Anil Kapoor he is simply superb as usual.
As for the heroines, Urmila Matondkar is the best of the three as she had the
opportunity to showcase the negative shades of her character.
On
the whole, 'Om Jai Jagadish' has the right amount of 'masala' to
make it appreciated. Now that the summer holidays are upon us, this
film makes good family get-away to the cinema!
