Asha
Bhosle - Bollywood's most versatile singer
|
|
|
Due
to her tremendous singing versatility, Asha has come a long
way from her debut playback singer in the film Chunariya (1948).
For
Asha, unlike her elder sister, Lata Mangeshkar, it was an uphill
struggle in those times. |
But
in 1957, Asha hit the limelight as a playback singer in O
P Nayar's 'Humse Nahin Dekha' and 'Naya Daur'.
Other
films to her credit soon followed a year later which included
'Howrah Bridge', 'Lajwanti' and 'Chalti Ka Naam Ghaadi'.
In
1973 she reached the pinnacle of success in the film 'Pran
Jaaye Par Vachan Naa Jaayee' which won her the prestigious
Filmfare Best Playback Singer Award.
There
was no stopping her as the upwardly mobile Asha of the 70's
soon saw herself veering towards cabaret style songs in box
office hits including Caravan (1971) and Hare Rama Hare Krishna
(1971).
Proving
to be her forte, Asha was immediately typecast in that genre
of music for many years to follow. |

|

|
But
that was all about to change when Asha showed her singing
capabilities in the 1981 box office smash 'Umrao Jaan' which
starred Rekha and Amitabh Bachchan.
A National Award followed five years later in the 1987 film
'Ijaazat' 'Freedom'). |
