Hari
Prasad Sharma (Sunil Dutt), is a simple minded farmer who has one
ambition in life.
And
that is to see his son, Munna (Sanjay Dutt), becoming a doctor.

So
to full fill his dreams, Hari sends Munna for his graduate studies
with full financial backing.
But
Munna’s destiny decides to take a sudden turn for the worse.
He
gets dragged into the dreary world of gangsters and goons.
Instead
of completing a doctorate’s degree, Munna ends up becoming Mumbai
‘s underworld don. He
hides the truth from his father.
All
goes well for Munna until his father decides to pay him a visit.
He
has fixed his son’s marriage with a fellow doctor, by the name of
Suman (Gracy Singh).
To
impress his father, Munna poses as a doctor and even constructs
a hospital. But
this pickle proves to be an impossible task for Munna.
Its
not long before Hari discovers the truth. And that’s when all hell
breaks loose in the most comical way.
Hari
is totally heartbroken, which prompts Munna to change his ways for
the better. He decides to become a doctor.

The
film faced a few cast changes during the planning stages.
Shah
Rukh Khan was supposed to play the part of Munna but then he was
replaced by Sanjay Dutt.
The
female lead also underwent a lot of changes. Aishwarya Rai was first
choice but since she was busy with her other films, she was replaced
by Rani Mukherjee.
She
too backed out and the role went to Tabu. But it was not long before
she left too.
The
role finally went to Gracy Singh of the Armaan fame.
Other
characters in this film include Zaheer (Jimmy Shergill) who suffers
from cancer but only wants the tender care of Dr Munnabhai.
There
is Circuit (Arshad Warsi) who plays the sidekick of Munna throughout
the film.
This
comedy is directed by Rajkumar Hirani. His past achievement includes
work in the editing department for Hindi films.
He
recently received the Best Editor award at the Zee Cine Awards for
director Vidhu Vinod Chopra’s Mission Kashmir.

Vidhu
is actually, the producer for Munnabhai MBBS. He is currently
working on two projects which includes a Hindi film titled Yagna
and Move 5, an English language thriller.
