Kyon
Ki has been inspired by (but does not mirror) the Hollywood flick
One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest.
Also,
not many people know that it is a remake of a Malayalam film called
Thalavattam by the same director.
The
film focuses on Anand (Khan) who is admitted to a mental asylum.
Dr Sunil (Jackie Shroff) is responsible for his medical care.
Dr
Sunil soon learns from Anand's diary that he had loved a girl called
Maya (Rimii Sen), who had died.
Flashback
in the film reveals that Maya has always played mischievous games
with her boyfriend.
But
soon, one of Maya's pranks turn into a serious accident - she dies
tragically. Blaming himself for this sad loss, Anand goes insane.
The
mental asylum is owned by Dr. Khurana (Om Puri), who believes in
the old fashion ways of treatment. Dr Sunil does not agree with
his ways. So, he continuously rebels against his rules.
Working
at the same hospital is Dr Tanvi (Kareena Kapoor), who happens to
be the daughter of Dr Khurana. She believes in what her father says
but later changes her outlook on the medical system operated at
the hospital.
Initially,
she is weary of Anand but gradually she begins to like him. So,
it is not long before she falls in love with the guy.
When
she learns about Anand's past, she decides to help him. With time,
he becomes better and falls in love with Dr Tanvi.
To
make matters worse, Dr Khurana is against his daughter marrying
Anand.
But
the shock comes when Anand learns that Tanvi is already engaged.
So
what happens next forms the crux of this moving film by director
Priyadarshan.
Unlike
his past releases (No Entry), Salman Khan has given a restrained
performance in Kyon Ki. His acting abilities match those
in the films, Tere Naam and Lucky -No Time For Love.
Salman
Khan not only looks great on screen, but he still has the ability
to attract large numbers of cinema goers.
Kareena
Kapoor also gave a subdued performance as Dr Tanvi. She looks a
million pounds in a simple sari with minimum makeup. It goes without
saying that she is a pure natural when it comes to acting.
Om
Puri, Jackie Shroff and Rimii Sen provide able support to the lead
stars, although the film belongs to Salman Khan.
The
musical score by Himesh Reshammiya is melodious, matching the mood
of the film. It consists of some good tracks and is worth a second
listen.
One
department which director Priyadarshan has always excelled in, is
the cinematography. He has magnificently captured the beauty of
Romania in this film.
On
the whole Kyon Ki is worth a watch especially as it stars
Salman Khan. It's a complete contrast to Garam Masala which
is a pure comedy from the same director. Worth a good night out.
