This
Yash Raj offering revolves around Zooni (Kajol), a blind Kashmiri girl. She travels
to Delhi with a dance troupe to take part in Republic Day celebrations. During
her short visit, she comes across Rehan (Aamir), a tour guide and a womaniser.
Fascinated
by Zooni's beauty, Rehan romances her and in no time, she falls in love with him.
They soon get married. Rehan
takes it upon himself to bring Zooni's sight back. So he takes her to an eye surgeon.
But
as she is being treated, she receives news about an attack on the Parliament House.
She later finds that Rehan was one of the innocent citizens who died in this incident. Concerned
about her welfare, Zooni's parents come to her aid. They take her back to Kashmir
where they hope she will forget her past.
But
we find that Rehan is not actually dead. He is a militant who is
involved in a possible nuclear attack.
Soon,
fate brings this lad back to his wife's doorstep in the midst of a raging storm.
Once
again past deeds are forgotten as Zooni and Rehan rediscover themselves.
But when Rehan's true identity is revealed, it is up to Zooni to
make a decision whether to carry on with this relationship.
The
first half of the film is full of fun and joy as the two characters experience
love for the first time.
Post
intermission we find serious scenes involving long silences during
which we see through the eyes of the characters.
One
minor detail which is overlooked by the director - why Zooni is
unable to recognise Rehan's voice upon his return?
But
such a mistake can easily be overlooked considering Fanaa's
brilliant screenplay and dialogue delivery. Simply superb!
This
is further complemented by the excellent cinematography which captures
the the beauty of Poland as it represents Kashmir in some of the
scenes.
Musical
score by Jatin-Lalit blends well with the story. It
goes without saying that Aamir Khan and Kajol have given an excellent performance. Kajol
plays her part of a blind Kashmiri girl with conviction whilst Aamir Khan looks
the part of a street smart Romeo. A
special mention goes to Master Ali Haji who plays Kajol's son in the film. The
audience will love him!
Once
again, Kunal Kohli hits the bull's-eye with Fanaa after his
box office hit, Hum Tum. This reaffirms his position as one
of Bollywood's most respectable directors.
Only
two weeks from its initial release, Fanaa entered the UK
film charts at number 6 and grossed an amazing 拢784,089. Well
worth seeing!
