After
a quite month, as expected, at this time of year and with the holy days of Ramadan
coming to an end, Hindi cinema opens with a bang with the release of the 1978
classic remake, Don. This
time round, the Badshah of Bollywood, Shah Rukh Khan steps into Amitabh Bachchan's
shoes who starred in the original version.
The
year is 2006 and Vijay, a cash-strapped father, is recruited by
police officer Desilva (Boman Irani), to masquerade as Don, a gangster
who is living on edge.
He
is constantly expanding the size of his empire whilst evading arrest or death
at the hands of his enemies. Vijay
infiltrates Don's cartel and succeeds in giving Desilva the information he needs
to bring it down.
But
in a bizzare twist of fate, Desilva is killed and the secret that
Don is in fact Vijay, is buried with him.
The
members of Don gang are the only ones to realise Vijay is a police informer and
now they want their revenge. On
the run to save himself, Vijay is helped by Roma (Priyanka Chopra), and Jasjit
(Arjun Rampal), for their own personal reasons.
Wanted
by the police and the gang will Vijay be successful in his mission??
This intense thriller gives the answers as the plot unfolds at a
fast space.
Shah
Rukh Khan in a double role as Don and Vijay excels throughout.
Recent
technological advances in Indian cinema mean that this remake appears
stylish and glossy.
Director
Farhan Akhtar has kept close to the original storyline and so allows little room
for any comparisions.
One
thing for sure, this verson does bring back memories of the 70s.
One
thing for sure, this film has already taken 拢1.2 million at
the UK box office. So going by this fact alone, it is definitely
worth a trip down to your local cinema for this UTV release!
