Two
rather jubilant and vivacious girls, Badki (Rani) and Chutki (Konkona) live with
their retired but pensionless father (Anupam) and their gloomy mum (Jaya) on the
banks of the Ganges. With
no money to pay their debts, their once well kept home is now in a shambles. Whilst
their dad gambles on lottery tickets for a wishful windfall, their mother grinds
herself into the night on her sewing machine to make ends meet. The
father's only regret is they do not have a son and if only Badki was a boy, they
would not be bullied by his elder brother and son who are fighting a legal battle
to gain possession of their home. As
their father's health deteriorates, Badki is left with no alternative but to go
to Mumbai for better job prospects. With
no qualifications and with increasing pressure to send money back home, Badki's
one bitter encounter forces her to become a highly paid escort. From
then on she finds herself spiralling down a tunnel with no hope of returning home
in this heart-rending drama. Director
Sarkar's female orientated melodrama may have the right emotions, but the movie
does have its share of faults too. Scenes
involving Abhishek's character are not fully developed, whilst tension built up
by the uncle-son duo fizzles out in the climax, as the director hurriedly gives
the story a happy ending. Rani
Mukerji gives her seasoned best, but it is Konkona Sen who surprises with a superb
performance as the na茂ve self-centred Chutki, coming of age as a wise responsible
woman. Jaya
Bachchan shows her acting calibre once again by expressing her emotions through
her eyes rather than dialogue. Kunal
Kapoor as Chutki's boyfriend provides the lighter moments in the otherwise serious
film. On
the whole Laaga Chunari Mein Daag is for those who love heart-rending drama with
a happy ending. With an accumalted total of 拢633,180 at the UK box office,
this drama is slowly climbing the UK charts. Fancy
