If you listen via Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds (or a device that is listed on the Sounds help site) you will not be affected, but if you use a third party app, an internet radio or bespoke device, these changes may affect you. Whilst Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Podcasts remain available to third party podcast apps, other on demand content will now only be available on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds.

Why are you making these changes?

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú must do everything reasonable to ensure that UK listeners are able to access the public services that are intended for them, in a range of convenient and cost-effective ways. We also must ensure that third parties are able to meet Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú requirements including prominence, which helps listeners to find content we’ve made for them, and sharing of data, which helps us understand what people are listening to, which in turn helps us improve our content and services. At the same time, it’s important we make sure that third parties do not use our streams without permission in non-compliant ways, like serving advertisements around our on demand content, for example. As such, we will start restricting access to some of our audio (non-podcast) on demand content.

These changes take effect from the 8 July 2024. This does not affect Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds, or Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú podcasts that are available via podcast apps.

We notified device manufacturers, where possible, in January 2024.

What should I do if I lose access to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Audio On Demand?

If using a third-party app, use Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds instead. If you are using an internet radio device, you may lose access to some audio on demand content, but our podcasts will still be available on many devices. You might still be able to listen to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú audio on demand via your device by streaming from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

For other ways of adapting a device to listen to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds, please read our FAQ: How can I get Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds on my Hi-Fi?

We are unable to grant access to individual users and suggest you use Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds instead.

Can I check if my device will be affected?

Unfortunately, we are unable to advise on specific devices. Please contact your manufacturer to find out if your device will be affected.

Further information for third party providers.

Enquiries from third party providers can be made via your Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú contact if you have one, or by contacting the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú’s carriage team.

Anonymous (not verified) 08 July 2024 Mon, 08 Jul 2024 09:00:03 +0000 Anonymous 13304 at http://bbc-sounds.local Where can I find categories on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds? http://bbc-sounds.local/questions/recent-changes-to-bbc-sounds/find-categories Where can I find categories on Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds?

On the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds website and Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds mobile/tablet app, head to the homepage and scroll down. As well as 80,000 hours of radio, exclusive music mixes and brilliant podcasts, Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds now has all the key features iPlayer Radio had and much more, including live radio streams, Live Restart, Continue Listening, My Sounds, more categories, and personalised and curated recommendations.

When did this happen?

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds website was launched in late 2018. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app replaced the iPlayer Radio app in the UK in September 2019, and the international iPlayer Radio app closed in Autumn 2020.

Why can’t I use the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app on my device?

It is standard practice for updated apps to no longer support older operating systems. This is the case for iPlayer as well as iPlayer Radio, and apps by other companies and organisations. The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app requires users to have a device which is capable of running iOS 12.2, Android 5 or Amazon OS 5 (or above). Supporting operating systems older than this is very costly and does not represent good value for money for licence fee payers, given the relatively small number of users we have still using those older operating systems. However, in the majority of cases users who have older devices which cannot be upgraded can still use Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds via the web at bbc.co.uk/sounds. We will continue to support Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú live radio online using HLS and DASH streaming technologies which will be available to the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú’s distribution partners.

Why did Shoutcast support end?

Shoutcast is an older streaming technology and many connected radio devices in the UK no longer use it for Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú streams. Ending support for Shoutcast will enable us to focus on the two most popular technologies currently used – HLS and DASH. This will allow us to understand more about how and where our content is consumed and will help us improve the services we offer to our listeners. Manufacturers and radio aggregators were notified of the changes in May 2022. We also played a message informing of the changes on all Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Shoutcast streams since November last year.

Can I get Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú live radio back on my Internet Radio device?

Please contact your manufacturer if you have lost Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú live radio to check if your device can be updated. If this is not possible, you still might be able to use the device by streaming live Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

For other ways of adapting a device to listen to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds, please read our FAQ: How can I get Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds on my Hi-Fi?

What about Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú World Service?

Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú World Service will continue to be available using Shoutcast outside of the UK.

Sarah.Smith 01 November 2022 Tue, 01 Nov 2022 09:19:50 +0000 Sarah.Smith 10645 at http://bbc-sounds.local Changes to live Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio streams http://bbc-sounds.local/questions/recent-changes-to-bbc-sounds/radio-changes Changes to live Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio streams

*** Updated August 2024 ***

We are making changes to how we support internet radio streams. If you listen via Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds (or a device that is listed on the Sounds help site) you will not be affected, but if you use a third-party app, an internet radio or bespoke device, these changes may affect you.

Why are you making these changes?

The Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú must do everything reasonable to ensure that UK listeners are able to access the public services that are intended for them, in a range of convenient and cost-effective ways. We also must ensure that third-parties are able to meet Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú requirements including prominence, which helps listeners to find content we’ve made for them, and sharing of data, which helps us understand what people are listening to, which in turn helps us improve our content and services. At the same time, it’s important we make sure that third-parties do not use our streams without permission in non-compliant ways, like serving advertisements around our radio services for example. As such, we will start restricting access to our radio streams. They will only be available to third parties that meet Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú requirements.

We recently applied this change to nations and local radio stations. On 3 October 2023, this change was rolled out to all our national Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú stations.

We notified device manufacturers, where possible, in May 2022 and have been working with them to minimise the impact to listeners.

Access to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio has ended for some additional non-compliant third parties in 2024.

What should I do if I lose Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio on my device or app?

If using a third-party app, use Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds instead. If you are using an internet radio device, please contact the manufacturer as it’s possible services could be made available again on your device. Unfortunately, it’s not practicable for the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú to grant access to devices that are no longer supported by the manufacturer. However, you might still be able to use the device by streaming live Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú radio from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app on a smartphone or tablet (Bluetooth, Airplay or Chromecast).

If your device does not support protected HLS and DASH streaming technologies, which is how we will distribute radio streams online, please listen via Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds, or consider adapting the device. For example, using Bluetooth to play radio from the Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Sounds app on your smartphone.

What about Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú World Service?

Access to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú World Service will not be restricted.

Further Information for 3rd party providers

Please visit: Information for 3rd parties regarding changes to Â鶹¹ÙÍøÊ×Ò³Èë¿Ú Live radio streaming

Anonymous (not verified) 20 July 2023 Thu, 20 Jul 2023 14:00:02 +0000 Anonymous 11829 at http://bbc-sounds.local
