The first Bundesliga derby between east and west Berlin was temporarily stopped after flares were thrown on to the pitch.

Sebastian Polter's 90th-minute penalty for Union Berlin - the first club from east Berlin to reach the Bundesliga - earned a famous win over rivals Hertha.

Play was halted at the beginning of the second half as fans threw flares, leading to 10 minutes of stoppage time.

The players were initially withdrawn, but emerged a few minutes later.

There had never been a Bundesliga fixture between east and west Berlin, with this top-flight clash a poignant meeting between two sides of a city once divided by the Berlin Wall.

Hertha have since condemned the incident and said in a statement that the club "dissociates itself " from the "unsightly scenes" that overshadowed the derby.
