Middlesbrough's Jonny Howson has agreed a one-year contract extension but Rudy Gestede and Daniel Ayala have left, with their deals expiring on Tuesday.

Midfielder Howson, 32, who has also featured in defence this season, has played 133 times for Boro since arriving from Norwich in July 2017.

He has so far made 37 appearances this term, with the club 19th in the table.

On Saturday he started in Neil Warnock's first game in charge of Boro - a 2-0 win at fellow strugglers Stoke.

Striker Gestede, 31, joined Middlesbrough from Aston Villa in 2017 for a fee of between 拢6m and 拢7m and scored six goals in 58 league appearances, while defender Ayala, 29, played 216 times in almost seven years at the club.

Adam Clayton, George Friend, Marvin Johnson, and Ryan Shotton were also due to be out of contract on 30 June but have signed extensions for the final seven games of the season.
