Championship leaders Sunderland have brought in Pedro Ribeiro as a new assistant head coach to work under Regis Le Bris.

Ribeiro, 38, has worked across Europe and the Middle East in a number of similar roles as well as managerial posts in his native Portugal.

"Pedro has an impressive set of experiences," said the Black Cats' sporting director Kristjaan Speakman.

"He can use these to provide an alternative perspective, but importantly he is aligned to our values and playing identity."

Ribeiro moved into coaching when he was only 19 and eventually worked his way up to be an assistant coach at Porto and then with Al Ahli in Saudi Arabia, Olympiacos, Fenerbahce and 1860 Munich.

From there, Ribeiro took his first managerial job when he was 32, back in Portugal with Gil Vicente.

He has since had four other head coach roles, most recently with Leixoes in the Portuguese second tier.

Ribeiro will form part of Frenchman Le Bris' coaching staff with Mike Dodds, Michael Proctor and goalkeeping coach Alessandro Barcherini.
