Belfast Giants have signed netminder Garrett Zemlak to replace the injured Stephen Murphy.

Murphy will be sidelined indefinitely after sustaining a groin injury in Saturday's win against Coventry.

Canadian Zemlak, who was released by Braehead Clan earlier this month, will make his debut against former club Fife Flyers on Wednesday night.

Defenceman Sam Roberts broke his collarbone against Coventry and is also out for an indefinite period.

Zemlak had an outstanding 2011/12 season with the Flyers before moving to Braehead last summer.

The 23-year-old from Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, was released from his contract as the team struggled for consistency.

"We have been hit hard with injuries as of late, and losing Murph could have been disastrous, but we are happy that we were able to agree to terms with Garrett before he headed back to North America," said Giants general manager Todd Kelman,

"He had a few options in leagues over there but he wanted the opportunity here in Belfast and is looking forward to making his debut on Wednesday night."

The Giants, who are six points behind Elite League leaders Nottingham Panthers, take on the Flyers at the Odyssey at 19:30 GMT.
