Northampton Saints have signed locks Will Spencer and Gavin Thornbury on short-term contracts.

Spencer, 32, is joining from French second division side Soyaux-Angouleme but has a wealth of experience in the Premiership, with 76 previous appearances for Bath, Worcester Warriors and Leicester Tigers.

Thornbury, 30, will be making his first appearance in the competition after having spent the last seven seasons with Irish side Connacht.

The former Ireland youth international previously spent six months in New Zealand, where he helped Wanganui to lift the Mead Cup in 2016.

The second row duo have been brought in to fill gaps in the squad left by injuries to Emeka Atuanya and Tom Lockett, while Temo Mayanavanua has just returned from international duty with Fiji after winning the Pacific Nations Cup.

The reigning Premiership champions lost 38-16 to Bath in their first match of the new campaign and host Exeter Chiefs at Franklin's Gardens on Saturday.
