Bipolar disorder

Winston Churchill

Churchill's 'black dog'

One group who have taken some pretty extreme action to highlight bipolar disorder (manic depression) is the charity Rethink. It put a statue of Winston Churchill, wearing a straight jacket, in the middle of Norwich.

Pictured above is a statue of Winston Churchill - with a difference. The British hero is shown wearing a straitjacket.

The statue was put in Norwich town centre in March this year, as part of a wider campaign against stigma in mental health.

Controversial

Winston Churchill

Rethink was the charity behind it - it said Churchill was chosen because despite having bipolar disorder, or manic depression (his so called black dog), he was still able to make massive achievements.

It proved controversial - with Churchill's grandson, Conservative MP Nicholas Soames, saying:听"It's not only insulting, it's pathetic, it is grossly offensive to Sir Winston and his millions of admirers.''

The management of the city square where the statue was on display, decided it should be withdrawn.

On Wednesday September 20, 2006, 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio Stoke's Stuart George will be speaking to Paul Corry from Rethink to find out why they did it - and whether they think it worked.
