I'm Kevin McNulty, I was born in Stoke on Trent 63-years-ago and still live in the area. I have a creative job with a kitchen and bedroom manufacturing company, working in the showroom helping people design their ideal new rooms.

I'm creative at home too, my hobby is oil painting - and I've converted my loft into a studio space. I found the whole Inside Lives experience beneficial and very interesting. Learning the skills of writing, recording and editing my story was a total pleasure - all my imagined fears melted away.

I wanted to tell this story as we constantly hear of criminals who 'get away with it'. My anger prevented this individual from profiting from his crime. You have to be very angry, or very stupid to do what I did - I'm still not sure which applies to me!

I looked down at the miserable thug I was pinning to the floor and watched, almost with pleasure, the blood flowing from the head wounds I'd inflicted on him.

Only moments before he'd entered our off-licence armed with a very convincing mock-up of a sawn off shotgun and an axe and threatened my wife. He'd demanded the contents of the till and terrorised her. I'd seen this from the TV monitor in the back room and rushed into the shop to tackle him.

He wasn't to know that this day was the one year anniversary of another armed robbery by another thug. That time my wife, Sue, had been alone in the shop. I screamed at him "O no, you're not doing it to her again!". He was going to pay for the last one as well.

I attacked him in a frenzy of pent up revenge and quickly took the shotgun away from him. I had strength which can only come from huge anger. I used his imitation gun to choke him from behind until he suddenly produced an axe from his belt. He hit me on the head several times by swinging it around the back of his head. Oddly I felt no pain, such was my rage.

Blind fury swept over me as I simply wrenched the axe from him and beat him to the floor with it. I jumped on top of him and put the shaft across his throat. He must have realised that all his hopes for a quick robbery were over and he was instead fighting for his life. After a very brief struggle he put his arms out and croaked "Okay, it's over, I give up".

I held him down for several minutes until the door burst open and the police rushed in to take charge of the situation. Sue had called them during the fight and their response time was very fast.

Following his arrest, the attacker was given a long prison sentence, and I received the congratulations of the police. My wife and I didn't even have to go to court--the whole episode had been caught on CCTV.
