Utterson reads the document left with him by Dr Lanyon before his death. It describes a written request from Jekyll to acquire some chemicals from his laboratory to place with his messenger. The messenger duly arrives at midnight鈥nd Lanyon witnesses the transformation that will hasten his demise.
