Nappy changes may not always be your favourite part of your daily routine as a parent, but they can make great early learning experiences for your baby.

Make the most of this close face to face time with them by chatting, singing and letting baby feel your touch.

Watch the video below for some ideas.

Why talk to baby during a nappy change?

  • Nappy changes are great for having face to face interaction with your newborn.
  • Newborns can only focus on things very close by, so nappy changes are a great opportunity for them to engage with you close up.
  • It's a great chance for babies to feel your touch, which is great for bonding as it promotes the flow of oxytocin, the love hormone that gives both of you a warm fuzzy feeling.
  • Babies can listen to the sound of your voice and the words you say while watching the expressions you make with your face.

Ideas for entertaining baby during nappy changes

Use a high-pitched sing-song voice as you talk through all the things you're doing. This helps babies to tune into your voice and pay attention to the different sounds you make.

Get down to their level and make eye contact as you chat to keep them engaged.

Try blowing a raspberry softly on their belly, they'll love to feel your touch.

Sing nursery rhymes to baby as you change them - you could even try our Wee, Wee, Poo song or an action song where baby can feel your touch like Head, Shoulders, Knees and Toes or Round and Round the Garden.

If your baby fusses, try hanging a mobile overhead as you change them - talk to them about the different dangly objects that catch their eye.
