Official figures suggest that every year between 20 and 30 people are killed by fumes leaking from faulty gas appliances in the home.

But with research suggesting that one in five of all households with gas will have a problem fire, boiler or cooker, campaigners suspect that many more deaths from carbon monoxide go undiagnosed and unreported.

is coming to the end of a year-long review of gas safety in the home - its recommendations are currently awaiting ministerial approval.

But campaigners say that the HSE hasn't gone far enough and fear that an opportunity to reduce the death toll from carbon monoxide has been missed.
