The days of the traditional weekly bin day could be numbered. With Welsh local authorities facing hefty fines on landfill tonnage, the pressure is on for them to up their recycling rates.
The European Union and the Welsh Assembly Government have set tough targets for the authorities to reach by 2010, and if they don't, there could be millions of pounds in penalties to pay.
One option to up recycling rates is alternate week collections. With nearly 200 authorities in the UK now collecting refuge fortnightly, and three already switched in Wales, that alternative seems popular, but not with householders.
Over the water, some Irish local authorities charge per weight of waste instead of council tax. Could this be the future of waste in Wales?
