United Nations Day for Older People

As life expectancy rises in the coming decades, so too will the numbers of people developing Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia.
Today marks United Nations Day for Older People, and sees the introduction in Wales of the new Mental Capacity Act, aimed at giving dementia patients and those suffering from other mental illnesses more of a say in their medical and social care.
But how well do we care for the thousands of people who are already suffering, and the families who struggle to support them?
Eye on Wales hears from a senior hospital consultant, who claims over-stretched services have reached crisis point in demand for hospital and care home beds, domiciliary care, day and respite facilities.
The programme reveals calls for a national dementia strategy for Wales, to ease the burden on patients and their families and plan ahead for an anticipated 30% rise in patient numbers in the coming decades.
