The average house price in Wales is now over four times average earnings and many can't afford to get on the housing ladder.
Add to that the second home phenomenon in rural Wales and you have a big problem.
The crisis has become so acute that the Welsh Assembly Government has pledged to build at least 6500 affordable homes over the next four years.
Although this is welcome news, there are concerns over how it can and will be done.
There are schemes in place such as section 106 orders, home buy schemes and rural housing enablers, but some say it's not enough. Some say there needs to be a complete rethink on the way we provide affordable and social housing and soon before the situation gets any worse.
This week Eye on Wales asks whether authorities can turn the Welsh Assembly government's four year plan on affordable housing into reality.
