With the number of house repossessions at an eight-year high - there were 27,100 last year - more and more people are finding themselves in court, fighting to keep a roof over their head.

But are they all getting a fair hearing from the borrowers? Research to be published by Shelter Cymru later this week suggests not.

A survey by the housing charity of Welsh households that have experienced mortgage problems discovered that when they found themselves in difficulty, most tried to negotiate with their lenders but many found the lender to be inflexible.

With mortgage court actions surging and 1.4 million borrowers predicted to experience 'mortgage shock' when their current fixed term deals come to an end over the coming year, Shelter says it's time for a new approach to mortgage misery.
