Measles Outbreak

Measles Outbreak

Joanna Davies' grandchildren didn't have the MMR jab and recently contracted measles. Why are so many parents still reluctant to give their children the triple MMR jab and where does that leave public health policy?

Monday 08 June

As the number of confirmed cases of measles edges towards 300, Eye on Wales brings together doctors, politicians and parents to debate the on-going outbreak.

The programme hears from the two worst affected counties in Wales - Carmarthenshire and Conwy - speaking to parents who have either embraced or spurned the MMR triple vaccine.

Joining Peter Johnson in the studio will be the Plaid Cymru health spokesperson Helen Mary Jones, who is also the Assembly Member for Llanelli, where there have been a number of measles cases.

Dr Joanna Longstaffe runs a private GP practice in Cardiff. She endorses the MMR vaccine and has given it to her children. But she also offers parents who aren't convinced of its safety the option of single jabs.

And Jackie Fletcher is the founder of the organisation JABS - a support group for parents who believe their children have been damaged by vaccines.

They'll be discussing the factors behind the current outbreak and debating what steps need to be taken now to prevent a measles epidemic.
