Swansea Film Festival Finances

High-profile resignations earlier this year of stars such as Catherine Zeta Jones and Michael Sheen put the spotlight firmly on the Swansea Bay Film Festival.

But what of the Swansea-based organisation behind this and a network of fifteen other film festivals worldwide? Tom Singleton investigates.

Last updated: 26 June 2011

The Swansea Bay Film Festival launched in 2006 and is run by Amritsa Limited.

Since its launch, it has attracted controversy amid criticism surrounding issues such as lack of publicity or scheduling, the absence of a jury system, and inadequate screening facilities.

American filmmakers Steve Rosen and Terri DeBono made a film about their experiences at the 2010 Swansea Bay Film Festival.

The film details how they were treated at the festival, and has attracted nearly 12,000 Youtube viewings.

Concerns have also been expressed about other Amritsa festivals, including the International Film Festival of South Africa.

Amritsa's portfolio of festivals this year stretches from St Lucia in the Caribbean to Egypt, Thailand and Australia, as well as a number of events in Wales later in the year.

Now, questions are being asked about the financial operation behind these events, run by Amritsa director Binda Singh.

Eye On Wales explores these concerns, and questions where income from these events is going.
