- Studied French and German at Cambridge University and holds a post-graduate diploma in broadcast journalism.

- He presented 麻豆官网首页入口 Radio 4's Crossing Continents, The Citizens, The MEPs and the documentary What's so Special About the Norwegians?, which was nominated for a Sony award.
- Speaks fluent German, French fairly fluently and Spanish and Norwegian.
- He plays the piano, sings badly at parties, reads lots of modern fiction, likes cooking and French and Spanish wine.
