Scientists and farmers use selective breeding to improve the characteristics of plants and animals. This includes genetic sequencing - a process which allows scientists to determine the precise sequence of DNA nucleotides for a living organism.

Plant and animal breeding

Scientists and farmers have manipulated the DNA of crops and animals by selective breeding for centuries. This has been used to improve certain characteristics for example:

  • higher food yields
  • higher nutritional values
  • pest and disease resistance
  • the ability to thrive in particular environmental conditions

These characteristics help to support sustainable food production. The quality of a variety or strain of plant (cultivar) can be investigated using plant field trials.
