The prophets
Adam
Adam was the first man, who was created by Allah in his own image. Eve, the first woman, was created from one of Adam鈥檚 ribs. Both Adam and Eve disobeyed Allah鈥檚 orders, so they were banished from the paradise they had been given by Allah. Once Adam had confessed his wrongdoings, he became the first prophet. Adam is seen as the father of the human race. He is also seen as Allah鈥檚 khalifahSuccessor; inheritor; representative custodian; vice-regent. In the Qur鈥檃n, Adam is called the khalifah of God, and Muslims believe that humans are God鈥檚 khalifahs on Earth - an important concept in the Islamic religion. and the angels were expected to serve him.
Ibrahim
Ibrahim was brought up in a polytheisticBelief in more than one God. culture. However, he believed in one only god, which is a monotheismBelief in one God. belief. He had two sons, named Ishaq (Isaac) and Isma鈥檌l (Ishmael). He was also an ancestor of Muhammad. Ibrahim is considered to be one of the greatest prophets.
Isa
Isa received one of Allah鈥檚 most important revelationWhen something that was previously hidden becomes known. In religions such as Christianity, Islam and Judaism it may be the sending down of God鈥檚 word in the form of a teaching or a person., called the Injul. His mother was Maryam (Mary) and he performed many miracles. Isa followed the concept of tawhidThe belief in the oneness of Allah. It is acknowledged in the First Pillar of Islam: There is no god but God., and because of this many Muslims wish to follow in his footsteps by worshipping Allah as the one God.
Isa is known as Jesus in Christianity, and Christians believe that he is the son of God. Although he is a prophet in Islam, most Muslims do not believe that Isa is the son of God. They also do not believe that he was crucifixionRoman method of execution by nailing someone to a cross, often until they die of asphyxiation; used on Jesus and many others. and resurrectionThe Christian belief that Jesus rose from the dead on the third day after the crucifixion. The rising from the dead of believers on the Last Day in a new, or risen, life.. Muslims believe that Isa will return when Allah judges the world.
Musa
Musa (who is also known as Moses in the Bible) is important within Islam because he was given the Al-Kitab (scripture) and Al-Furqan (the ability to know right from wrong). He was the only prophet to speak directly with Allah. Like Isa, Musa performed miracles. One of these was the parting of the seas, which allowed the Israelites to gain their freedom from slavery.
Dawud
Dawud killed Jalut. Because of this, he was made king of the Israelites.
In Christianity and Judaism, the story of Dawud and Jalut is known as the story of David and Goliath.
Ismail
Ismail was the son of Ibrahim but also a prophet himself. He is seen as the father of the Arabs, or Abul Arab. Ismail helped his father to build the Ka'aba or 碍补鈥檅补丑The cube-shaped building in the centre of Makkah (Mecca), which is the most sacred site in Islam. which is considered to be the house of Allah.
