Why did the first little pig choose straw to build a house? (Signed)

Description

An exploration of one of the great mysteries of our time - why did the first of the Three Little Pigs choose to build a house from straw? The first little pig apparently carried out a fair test by building a wall of bricks, another of wood and a third of straw. He decided the wall built from straw was the best. What led the pig to decide this? How did the first little pig get it so wrong? Having seen the evidence the pupils are left to make their own decisions and draw conclusions from the evidence provided.

Classroom Ideas

Students could consider whether the first little pig really did carry out a fair test when investigating which material to build his house from. Students could make suggestions as to how make this test fairer to produce more accurate results. Students could go for a walk in their local area and identify the different materials used in houses and other buildings or structures. Back in the classroom students could explore pictures of these materials and consider why these were chosen over others. They could use this discussion to create a list of desirable properties materials should have to build a house, such as waterproof, durable or insulating. Students could then plan and design their own fair test to investigate a particular property of a range of materials. They could use these results to design and draw a new house for the first little pig.
