What were the Romans' religious beliefs?

Description

The Romans did not embrace Christianity until after they had withdrawn from Caledonia. Rather than one god, they believed in many, each of which they would pray to, and offer gifts or sacrifices to, for a specific purpose. The Romans also believed that some animals had special powers that they would try to harness through creating sculptures or images of them.

Classroom Ideas

Students could be provided with passages from Roman mythology. They could cut out pictures of the different planets and write down their Roman names together with the different gods they represented. Students could research the characteristics and special powers of each Roman god as well as the extent to which Roman mythology has become part of our culture today.
