Sun, shadows and time of day

Description

How you can tell the time of day from shadows cast by the sun. The sun is our main source of light. Nuclear reactions at the core of the sun create energy in the form of heat and light. The light reaches us in just eight minutes and the earth depends upon it to grow and survive. The earth moves around the sun and, depending on the time of day, shadows formed by its light will be longer or shorter.

Classroom Ideas

Useful as an introduction to the Sun and shadows. In pairs, the students could use chalk to draw around each others鈥 shadows on the school playground. Standing in the same spot they could draw around the shadows at regular intervals. They could take photographs and discuss what happened to the shadows and why. A globe and torch could be used to represent Earth and the Sun to help with explanations.
