Paolo Nutini - 'Rewind'

Post categories:

Paolo NutiniHey, doesn't James Morrison sound different when he's half-asleep? Not LOADS different, obviously, it's not like he's gone metal or anything, but that unmistakeable voice sounds a little darker and more hoarse, and generally more raggedy around the edges.

Just as well the musical backing is as immaculate as ever, eh?

What? It's WHAT? It's NOT James Morrison? And I used the word 'unmistakeable' there too, didn't I? Bah!

Oh well, it's hardly the biggest mistake in the world. And as unfair as it seems to lump two musical newbies together in cavalier fashion when they're both trying to carve their own place in the world...there is much about the cosy, comforting instrumentation and gruff delivery of this song which strikes a lot of familiar chords. Actually, stuff it, they're ALL familiar, from start to finish.

So, points deducted for lack of originality, but can Paolo claw some back for maybe being brilliant at what he does, or for leaving a trail of sobbing (but happy) fans in his wake? Well, kinda maybe...I mean, it's not a bad song, and it's sung well and everything. It's just hard to get excited about. Oh, look! A seagull!

PS: The very kind people at Paolo's record company have sent us this little mini-documentary about the making of the video for 'Rewind'. Sort of like DVD extras, only in internet form. Enjoy!
