Red Hot Chili Peppers - 'Desecration Smile'

RHCPY'know, despite being the biggest rock act in the world right now, and despite the fact that they absolutely deserve to be so, and despite the fact that they are clearly an amazing live band who can play all the colours in the rock rainbow from rage red to desolation blue...there's something about the band's current output which just screams out for some QUALITY CONTROL!

I mean to say, look at this video, just LOOK at it! Never mind that the song is taken from an incredibly long double album of far too many songs (even if they're all brilliant, there's just too much to get through, THERE, I SAID IT!), or that the last video they put out - for 'Snow (Hi Ho, Hi Ho)' was also clearly done on the hoof, what IS this?

A single camcorder on a tripod, and the band jigging about in front of it, pulling faces and acting like they're really enjoying themselves despite the fact that all four of them have a look in their eyes which suggests they are actually counting down the seconds until the red light goes off and they can STOP THIS DEGRADING CHARADE.

Hardly makes you wanna rush to your local record shop/download site and buy THE SONG WHICH MADE THE CHILIS FEEL AWKWARD, does it? Which is a shame, cos this is a nice song, all rippling acoustic guitars and sweet harmonies. It's probably not the best song on their album to release as the next single, but then seeing as no-one outside of the band has heard the whole thing (be honest, you haven't either), how could anyone possibly suggest a better one and be sure that they're right?

I was actually really happy when I found out they were releasing this as a single. The Chilis are my favourite band, and this song is one of my favourites of theirs. The buildup is amazing, the chorus is great and the lyrics are meaningful. I think it definitely deserves more than three stars, by far the best song on the album (which yes, I did get through, it took some dedication). It's good they released this as a single, because as it's a song that means so much to me, maybe others will hear it and feel the same way...

Looks and sounds like one of the greatest bands have mellowed with age!

I hope this isn't representative of the rest of the album which I'm looking forward to.
